Trihexyphenidyl is used along with other medications to treat symptoms of Parkinson's Disease caused by certain medications (tremor, slurred speech) caused by certain medications . Trihexyphenidyl is a class of medications called antimuscarinics. It works by relaxing muscles and nerve impulses that control the function of muscles.

Dosage & Administration Dosage should be individualized. The initial dose should be low and increased, especially in patients over 60 years of age. Whether Trihexyphenidyl may be best be given before or after meals.

Precautions Patients with cardiac, liver, or kidney disorders, or with hypertensiaon, should closely be monitored. Since trihexyphenidyl has parasympatholytic activity, it should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma, obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract or genitourinary tracts, and in the elderly with possible prostatic hypertrophy. Trihexyphenidyl is not recommended for use in patients with tardive dyskinesia unless they have concomitant Parkinson's disease. Abrupt withdrawal of treatment for parkinsonism may result in acute exacerbation of parkinsonism symptoms; therefore, abrupt removal should be avoided.

Idiopathic Parkinsonism: 1 mg of trihexyphenidyl may be administered first day. The dose may be increased by 2 mg increments at intervals of three to five days.

Use: For the control of extrapyramidal disorders caused by central nervous system drugs such as dibenzoxazepines, phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, and butyrophenones.

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell your doctor about your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines.

Comments: -Doses should be individualized; start low and increase slowly, especially in elderly patients. The total daily dose may be better tolerated if given in divided doses; doses greater than 10 mg / day should be divided and given 4 times a day. -The decision to dose before or after meals should be based on the needs of the patient; this drug does cause dry mouth and it may be beneficial, unless it causes nausea.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose and continue the dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed.

Before taking trihexyphenidyl, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to trihexyphenidyl or any other medicines. Tell your doctor and pharmacist that you are taking drugs, especially amantadine (Symmetrel), digoxin, haloperidol (Haldol), levodopa (Larodopa, Sinemet), tranquilizers, vitamins. Tell your doctor if you have a kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis, heart or blood pressure problems, problems with the urinary system or prostate, or stomach problems. If you resort to surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking trihexyphenidil. You should be aware that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.

Eye disorders: Dilatation of the pupils with loss of accommodation and photophobia, raised intraocular pressure (see section 4.4).
